Chase Bank & Restaurant Row

This building was initially designed with aluminum rectangular pieces that would dress up the exterior facade. The builder wanted to take a different approach to minimize the denting and damage that was easily caused to the aluminum finish material by using stucco and score lines to simulate the rectangular aluminum pieces around the building. The radius corner window and off shape brings in an interesting design. This building is located across the infamous Viper Room in West Hollywood, CA.

In Architecture, concept design implies an idea, or a range of ideas, a development approach, a guiding concept, and design intent. The conceptual approach places the quantum of development intelligently on the site. It is vital that the designer and the client agree on the objectives and outcomes of the concept design process in advance.

Conceptual Design Phase; is an early phase of the design process, in which the broad outlines of function and form of something are articulated. It includes the design of interactions, experiences, processes, and strategies.

-----

The Conceptual Phase; is the initial phase of research and involves the intellectual process of developing a research idea into a realistic and appropriate research design.

-----

Detailed Design; is the phase where the design is refined and plans, specifications and estimates are created. Detailed design will include outputs such as 2D and 3D models, P & ID's, cost build-up estimates, procurement plans etc. This phase is where the full cost of the project is identified.

Frequently Asked Question

What are the benefits of creating a conceptual design?

  • The first benefit to conceptual design is always the clarity it provides of what a product can do and what its intended use is. This is key when creating a product and without this, the process will encounter problems later down the line.

  • Secondly, it helps with the initial start of a budget plan/database and estimate process if no idea has been brought forth for the final design.
